Course Description

This course gives students the hands-on lab experience required for AUTO 1601. Students will use the principles and laws that govern electrical circuits, including Ohm's and Kirchhoff's Laws. Students will also gain understanding of the use of meters, wiring diagrams, wiring repair, conductors, semiconductors, PN junctions, diodes, transistors, multiplexing, computers and sensors.

Justification

This course is required for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) Education Foundation accreditation. It is approved by the advisory committee and is a core course for the Automotive Technology AAS degree.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to safely perform the tasks listed in the current edition of ASE Education Foundation Certification and Accreditation for Automobile Training Programs.
  2. Students will use Ohms law and other electrical formulas and be able to calculate resistance, current, voltage, watts, etc.
  3. Students will be able to use the appropriate specialized tools for testing, measuring, and repairing electrical circuits and systems.
  4. Students will be able to build and test series, parallel, and series/parallel circuits.
  5. Students will maintain a reasonably clean work environment.

Course Content

•Safe practices when working on or around electrical components
•The principles of Ohm's law, Kirchoff's law, series circuits, and parallel circuits
•Measuring electrical circuits with a digital multi-meter and proper wiring repair
•Theory, principles, and diagnosis of relays, solenoids, various diodes, transistors, integrated circuits, and computer modules
•Proper usage of circuit protection devices such as fuses, circuit breakers, and fusible links
•How to read and understand electrical wiring diagrams and electrical symbols
