Course Description

This course covers the theory, operation, and diagnosis of starting systems, charging systems, lighting systems, instrumentation, and automotive accessories. Corequisite: The lecture AUTO 2601 must be taken concurrently with the lab AUTO 2605.

Justification

This course is required for Automotive Service Excellence Education Foundation accreditation. It is approved by the program advisory committee. It is a core course for the Automotive Technology AAS degree.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to safely perform the tasks listed in the current edition of ASE Education Foundation Certification and Accreditation for Automobile Training Programs.
  2. Students will understand the basic theories of Starting and Charging system operation and diagnosis.
  3. Students will be able to use the appropriate specialized tools and equipment to diagnose complex electrical and electronic systems.
  4. Students will understand safety procedures and diagnosis of Hybrid and Electric vehicles.

Course Content

Theory, operation and diagnosis of:
Direct current starting systems.
AC generator systems.
Building an electrical or electronic testing tool.
Vehicle communication network systems.
Instrumentation and warning systems.
Vehicle accessory systems.
Radio frequency and Infotainment systems.
Passive restraint and vehicle safety systems.
Hybrid and electric vehicles.
