Course Description

This course explores the outdoor industry and associated careers. It provides students opportunities with exposure to a variety of outdoor-related businesses and organizations.

Justification

This course is designed to provide students an introduction to outdoor-related businesses and organizations and the associated careers in the outdoor field. This course may transfer as major credit, general education, or elective. It fulfills general education credit within the Integrated Exploration (IE) category.

General Education Outcomes

  1. A student who completes the GE curriculum has a fundamental knowledge of human cultures and the natural world. Students will gain a fundamental knowledge of human culture by studying and and applying aspects of applied psychology, and business as they relate to outdoor leadership. The course will utilize written assignments, discussion, and practical hands-on applications.
  2. A student who completes the GE curriculum can read and research effectively within disciplines. Students are required to read, retrieve, and interpret a variety of data from charts, graphs, online resources, and print sources to complete assignments and activities. Students will research and evaluate outdoor industries. They will develop a mock outdoor organization-based research and evaluation of the market and business trends. Students will be assessed through participation, written assignments, discussion, and practical hands-on applications.
  3. A student who completes the GE curriculum can draw from multiple disciplines to address complex problems. Students will have opportunities to address complex problems. They will apply knowledge from multiple disciplines (including math, business, and social science) to evaluate and address problems related to the outdoor industry. Students will be assessed through discussion, practical application, and written assignments.
  4. A student who completes the GE curriculum can reason analytically, critically, and creatively. Students will apply hands-on, critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical reasoning while forming their outdoor organization. Students will be assessed through discussion, practical application, and written assignments.

General Education Knowledge Area Outcomes

  1. a) Students will apply teamwork, leadership, and group management specific to an outdoor business. Teamwork is an inherent aspect of this course. Students must work and collaborate with each other both in small groups and as a class to develop, research, present, and form an outdoor organization. Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will explore the history of outdoor recreation and outdoor industry/organizations.
  2. Students will gain experience with the outdoor industry and outdoor organizations.
  3. Students will assess the practices of outdoor-related businesses and organizations.
  4. Students will develop a workable executive summary business plan for an outdoor business.
  5. Students will organize/run a mock outdoor organization and provide a good or service.

Course Content

This course promotes a learning environment by focusing on building a community, where each student has the opportunity to develop physically, emotionally, and intellectually as it relates to outdoor-related business and careers. Efforts are made to make learning meaningful and transferable by providing multiple perspectives and various viewpoints by using several methods/activities to deliver course content that focuses on outdoor business and careers including the history of outdoor recreation and outdoor industry, types of outdoor organizations - private, government, non-profit, and business plans/practices.
