Course Description

In the Professional Development and Industry, State Laws, and Specific Continuing Education course, students learn additional skills to prepare to become professionals in their chosen cosmetology/hair design field. Students learn about the history and career opportunities in the industry. Students learn and practice life skills and understand the importance of keeping a professional image which is expected of a cosmetologist/barber. They incorporate and practice good communication skills with fellow workers, employees, and clients. They also learn how to open, run, and operate their own salon business and create a professional portfolio. Students are taught about the different laws and rules associated with the cosmetology/barbering-related fields and prepare to take the state written and practical exams. Students demonstrate competency with assignments, tests, and practical skills.

Justification

This is a course required by the State Cosmetology Board to prepare students for further in-depth study in cosmetology/barbering theory and practices. It is also required before students are authorized to work in a laboratory setting or with patrons.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will create a portfolio, a resume, and a job application. They will understand the job application process as they work in teams to complete a mock interview.
  2. Students will identify a mentor and understand the employee evaluation process in the workplace.
  3. Students will identify the guidelines used to build a clientele, how to use social media, the ethical principles of selling, and the characteristics of a thriving professional.
  4. Students will have an understanding of healthy habits, the process of goal setting, and how to create a time-management plan.
  5. Students will demonstrate and explain professional image and ethics in the workplace.
  6. Students will identify the guidelines for conducting the client consultation and for using effective communication skills with others.

Course Content

This course aims to do the following:• Explain the laws and rules for Utah state licensing and malpractice procedures for cosmetology-related professionals.• Describe and practice the process of taking and passing the state board examinations.• Identify the principles of a cover letter, resume, and professional portfolio associated with seeking employment.• Apply the importance of beauty, wellness, appearance, and physical presentation.• Articulate the importance of communication and client consultations in the salon setting.• Explore various options for salon ownership requirements and various compensation methods for salon professionals.• Demonstrate competencies necessary for the clinical setting.• Demonstrate and learn practical applications while working on manikins.• Interpret other theories, practical applications, and procedures associated with professional development.
