Course Description

This course presents chemical services, esthetic and nail service practices, theory, instruction, demonstrations of technical procedures, and practical application of cosmetology esthetic skills. Services such as chemical relaxers, color theory, color brand-specific classes, coloring techniques, perming, and perming techniques. Students will receive instructions, demonstrations, and practical applications for each of these basic cosmetology/hair design chemical services. Students will learn the hair removal, facials, and makeup procedures. Students will also learn how to perform manicures, pedicures, gel Polishes, nail care, and nail enhancements Students will demonstrate competency with assignments, tests, and practical skills.

Justification

This is a course required by the State Cosmetology Board to prepare students for further in-depth study in cosmetology/barbering theory and practices. It is also required before students are authorized to work in a laboratory setting or with patrons.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will perform the principles and practices related to cosmetology/barbering skills; i.e., general hair care, styling, haircutting, straight razor shaving, hair extensions, chemical texture services, hair coloring, skin and nail care services, and other material essential to becoming a successful cosmetologist/barber.
  2. Students will maintain a clean work environment and follow the proper procedures for safety and infection control. Students will recognize potential safety hazards and implement accepted methods to mitigate those hazards.
  3. Students will be able to evaluate and communicate client needs, determine the action needed, maintain client records, and use professional ethics relevant to the salon business. Students will be assessed as they perform a client consultation at the beginning of each service.
  4. Students will exhibit professionalism as they complete and present their Fashion Fusion Project.
  5. Students will be able to serve in the community as they provide services to the elderly in local care centers, involved in club activities, and teach hygiene classes to youth groups.

Course Content

This course aims to do the following:• Define the law of color, complementary colors, the color wheel, color levels, color tones, and neutralizing tones.• Describe and demonstrate hair coloring, lightening, and chemical relaxer techniques.• Teach color brand-specific instructions related to mixing and applying hair color.• Let students experiment with various application placement and dimensional application methods.• Define the methods of permanent waving and wrapping.• Demonstrate proper permanent wave procedures and wrapping methods.• Analyze skin including recognizing and describing various contraindications for facial and hair removal services.• Explain facial treatments including galvanic, heat lamps, high frequency, facial packs, facial masks, limited aroma therapy, and limited exfoliation.• Demonstrate proper facial services and apply facial treatments.• Describe limited exfoliation applications and techniques to include re-exfoliation, post-exfoliation consultation considerations, and chemical reactions.• Demonstrate massage techniques for the face and neck and basic facial services.• Demonstrate temporary hair removal techniques typically used in the salon.• Perform arching of the eyebrows and tinting of the eyelashes and eyebrows.• Explain and demonstrate correct sanitation procedures for hand and foot nail care.• Demonstrate proper manicure and pedicure procedures.• Perform proper UV gel enhancements.• Describe the procedure for applying acrylic nail enhancements.
