Course Description
This course introduces students to the process and practice of dance rehearsal and performance of ballroom dance. It includes lecture/demonstrations and performances for the college, community, local schools and other venues as requested. Students are selected by audition/invitation.
Justification
This course will provide performance opportunities to students who wish to perform ballroom dance. This class is most similar to DANC 276R at UVU.
General Education Outcomes
- A student who completes the GE curriculum has a fundamental knowledge of human cultures and the natural world. This course allows students an opportunity to work in a variety of capacities in producing a dance work. They are tutored in the art and craft of ballroom dance and are evaluated on their contribution within the collaborative framework of the ballroom company. These experiences are invaluable in developing a student's appreciation and understanding of the art and craft of a ballroom dance company.
- A student who completes the GE curriculum can communicate effectively through writing and speaking. Students will respond to videotaped performances, their peers in class, and live performances. Written responses will include analysis of technique, choreography, performance skills and storyline.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Students will be able to demonstrate improved skills in performance including an increased understanding of musical rhythms in relation to ballroom dance, proper techniques specific to each dance, safe performance technique for lifts and drops, and stage presence.
- Students will develop skills for analyzing and evaluating the success of dance performances on the basis of technique, choeoagraphy, performance skills and storyline.

Course Content
This course will provide students with opportunities to learn: research skills for individual dances, safety in drops and lifts, floor patterns, rhythmic considerations for each dance, aesthetics in performance and execution, and working as a company ensemble.
