Course Description
This course is designed to give students a basic foundation in critical and evaluative reading. The course will also serve as a general introduction to literature with a focus on enjoyment, understanding, and analysis. Three genres will be covered--fiction, drama, and poetry.
Justification
The ESL Department at Snow College houses the intensive ESL program which is accredited through the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP).; The four-level program provides instruction for students at Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 (elementary through exiting levels). This course is part of the core curriculum for Level 4.
Student Learning Outcomes
- Students will be able to recognize and discuss great works of literature. Students will be able to discuss literary works using appropriate terminology. Students will understand differences and similarities between poetry, fiction, and drama.
Course Content
Students will read poetry, drama, and short stories from various cultures and authors from around the world. Students will be introduced to literary terms for discussion and understanding. Students will study how background information and biographical sketches of authors can be used to analyze and evaluate literature.
Key Performance Indicators: The following ranges will be used for the purpose of assessment. In order to pass the course, students must demonstrate a B mastery of course materials.
