ESL 0470 Level 2 Oral Communication

Course Description

This course is designed to continue the development of novice-intermediate ESL students. Students will improve "Basic Interpersonal Communicative Skills" and "Cognitive Academic Language Proficiency." In addition to focusing on vocabulary/grammar development, the course aims to increase contact hours and conversation practice. Students will be able to acquire CEFR Basic - Independent (A2-B1 level) vocabulary. This course is cross-listed with CED 00470 (Level 2 Oral Communication – Continuing Education).

Justification

This course is similar to the courses taught at other Utah ESL programs at the Intermediate low level. Placement for Level 2 is made with a placement test and oral proficiency interview. The course tries to develop both BICS and CALP focusing on vocabulary development and practice on high frequency topics. This course is taught at Snow College to move towards academic skills development in the four language skills.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Upon successful completion of ESL 0470, students will be able to understand the main points of familiar matters at work, school, and leisure, etc.
  2. Students will be able to deal with most situations related to everyday matters linguistically and culturally successfully.
  3. Students will be able to form sentences making statements and asking/answering questions, and giving reasons and explanations.
  4. Students will be able to describe past experiences and events, dreams, and personal interests.

Course Content

In this course, students will learn to comprehend and produce sentences using high-frequency expressions related to personal information, family, shopping, local geography, and employment. They will learn to communicate effectively in simple, routine exchanges and practice describing their backgrounds, current environments, and immediate needs. Students will practice developing control of past tense forms through storytelling and narrative practices. Students will learn to understand and ask appropriate questions, maintain conversations, and tell stories with detail and accuracy. They will learn to analyze and evaluate plans, express opinions, and maintain a conversation on familiar topics.
