This course strengthens English language learners’ ability to use grammar accurately and confidently in speaking and writing. Students will learn to express everyday life events and experiences using present, past, and future time frames. Instruction emphasizes practical communication and self-expression through contextualized grammar activities. Students will expand their understanding of sentence structure, verb tenses, and word forms while improving grammatical accuracy and fluency. Learners will develop control of CEFR A2 and B1 level grammar and vocabulary. This course is cross-listed with CED 0480 (Level 2 Grammar – Continuing Education).
The ESL Department at Snow College provides a three-level grammar sequence designed to prepare non-native speakers of English for academic coursework. ESL 0480 serves as the intermediate level course in this sequence. It offers essential instruction in English grammar concepts, including clause and sentence structures, modals, and tenses. Students gain grammar knowledge necessary to move towards advanced level grammar instruction in Level 3.
Instruction focuses on building intermediate level grammar knowledge in students through structured, context based practice. Students will learn grammatical structures, including phrases, phrasal verbs, conditionals, modals, imperatives, connectors, present time, past time, and future time. Students will learn to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of these grammar points through completing grammar exercises, working on group assignments, giving presentations, and taking quizzes and exams. Students will practice and learn to write and discuss topics that are relevant to everyday and academic life situations with oral and written grammatical accuracy and fluency.
