Commercial Driver’s License (CDL), Class A

The Commercial Driver’s License program provides professional driver training with both classroom theory discussion and in-vehicle hands-on training time. This course is designed to meet the Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) requirements set forth by the Federal Motor Carrier Administration (FMCSA) and the Utah Department of Transportation (DOT). Students will complete a range of driver competencies and become safe, comfortable, confident, law-abiding drivers. Students will become prepared to take the State of Utah driving skills tests for the Class A combination vehicle such as a tractor & trailer with air brakes.

Pre-admission requirements

Prior to registering for the CDL course all of the following prerequisites must be completed. 

  • Student must be at least 18. Please note: Interstate drivers must be at least 21
  • Have a valid driver’s license
  • Obtain a DOT medical certificate: (approximately $60-$130) The DOT medical certificate, or DOT card, shows that you are physically, mentally, and emotionally fit to operate a commercial vehicle. You must use an approved medical provider from the DOT registry, found here: nationalregistry.fmcsa.dot.gov
    • Note: After completing your exam, take your medical exam certificate to the Driver License Division to receive your DOT card.
  • CDL Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) Report: You get this from the Drivers License Division when they issue your Learner’s Permit. (approximately $8)
  • DOT Drug Screening
    • If you are sponsored by a company, you will need a letter from HR on company letterhead stating that you are participating in their drug screening and background check program.
    • If you are not sponsored by a company, drug screening must completed within two weeks prior to starting class. (approximately $60) DOT drug screening information is available at the Driver’s License office. See a list of DOT approved drug testing locations at accrediteddrugtesting.com.
  • Background Check (no fingerprints required)  (approximately $10-$15) Background checks can be obtained through approved providers, found here- nbinformation.com
