French Horn
Kathy Colton is enjoying her fourth year of teaching horn at Snow College. In addition to teaching private lessons, she coaches chamber ensembles and conducts masterclasses. In 2017, she hosted the First Annual Utah Horn Symposium, held at Snow College.
Colton also teaches horn at Brigham Young University (Provo, UT). She has taught lessons, brass methods, and masterclasses at BYU for over twenty years. She also teaches at the BYU Musicians’ Summerfestival and Institute camps. Her teaching experience also includes teaching at Utah Valley University for over ten years, and maintaining a highly successful private studio for over thirty-five years. “Kathy is one of the best private horn teachers in the western United States.” -Laurence Lowe, BYU Horn Professor.
Colton received her Bachelor of Music degree from Brigham Young University in Music Education and a Master of Music degree from University of Missouri-Columbia in Performance and Pedagogy with Laurence Lowe. She has also studied horn with well-known artists Greg Hustis, Jeff Kirschen, Shelley Showers, Steve Proser, Gaylen Hatton, Justine LeBaron, and Ralph Froelich.
She currently performs with the Sounding Brass Quintet and as a freelance musician. She has performed with the Utah Lyric Opera, Utah Regional Ballet Orchestra, Canyon Winds Quintet, Pioneer Theater Company, Ballet West Orchestra, Utah Symphony, and Florida Orchestra. She has performed with many acclaimed artists, including Ray Charles and Kurt Bestor. She is a clinician for Legacy Music Alliance conducting masterclasses in the public schools. She has conducted masterclasses across the country.
She lives in Utah and enjoys spending time with family and friends.
