Bass
Matthew Shumway is a native of Utah, a musician of many genres, and an experienced teacher. He holds two degrees in Double Bass Performance; a Bachelor’s from Brigham Young University-Idaho, and a Master’s from Northwestern University.
As a classical bassist, Matthew has performed with many artists and groups including Andrea Bocelli, Renée Fleming, Alfie Boe, and the Orchestra at Temple Square and Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square. He was the Principal Bass for the Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra from 2016-2018, and is the current Principal Bass for the Ballet West Orchestra.
Matthew’s performance experience goes well beyond traditional classical music. He has played with a number of popular artists including Collin Raye, Richard Marx, and David Archuleta. He also plays and sings with; the Mama’s Boys, a bluegrass band; Dusty Vinyl, a classical rock cover band; and is active as a recording artist.
In addition to maintaining a rigorous performance schedule, Matthew also spends many hours a week teaching music publicly and privately. He is the Adjunct Professor of Double Bass at Snow College and Southern Utah University. He maintains a thriving private bass and cello studio in Pleasant Grove Utah, and teaches every skill level from beginning to advanced. In September, 2014 Matthew married his incredible wife Eliza. They currently live in Pleasant Grove, Utah with their two boys.
