Course Description

This course completes the Class Piano sequence for music majors and culminates with the piano proficiency exam. This course also reinforces basic concepts of musical improvisation. (Additional fee required)

Justification

This course concludes the music major's progress toward piano proficiency, which is a requirement for all National Association of Schools of Music (NASM) accredited institutions. Similar courses are offered at other NASM accredited institutions in Utah and throughout the country.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will demonstrate technical proficiency at the piano, including scales, arpeggios, and chord progressions.
  2. Students will play repertoire at an intermediate to advanced level with proficiency.
  3. Students will sight read short compositions at an intermediate level

Course Content

This course will draw from the following skill building areas:

Score reading - vocal and instrumental

Repertoire - performance in recital of piano repertoire from memory

Transposition - reading transposing instrument parts at the piano

Sight reading - reading of repertoire pieces at an intermediate level

Technique - fingering, facility, pedaling, phrasing, expression and articulation

Faculty instructors will assess student areas of strength and weakness to focus a practice regimen to skills needing improvement.
