Beards and Masculinity

  • "It's been almost a year since an Australian university study declared that we have reached 'Peak Beard,' and that the ubiquitous accessory to male hipster faces was expected to begin a decline. Are beards just another waning fashion trend, or is there a stronger cultural undercurrent? What meaning have cultures attached to beards over the course of history? Is the current 'lumbersexual' movement a reaction to feminism, a longing for simpler times, or even a phase of human evolution? Please join proud beard owner and Snow College student Morgan Aldous for an evening discussion about all this and more!”

Title IX

  • What is Title IX?  Who is Snow College’s Title IX Coordinator?  What constitutes sexual harassment, and what should you do about it?  What exactly is consent?  Come learn the answers to these and many more questions about Title IX.

Fall 2014

Three-Part Film Series: Half the Sky

  • “Half the Sky: Turning Oppression into Opportunity for Women Worldwide includes a four-hour film broadcast in the United States and abroad, shot in 10 countries: Cambodia, Kenya, India, Sierra Leone, Somaliland, Vietnam, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Liberia and the U.S. Traveling with intrepid reporter Nicholas Kristof and A-list celebrity advocates America Ferrera, Diane Lane, Eva Mendes, Meg Ryan, Gabrielle Union and Olivia Wilde, the series introduces women and girls who are living under some of the most difficult circumstances imaginable — and fighting bravely to change them. Their intimate, dramatic and immediate stories of struggle reflect viable and sustainable options for empowerment and offer an actionable blueprint for transformation.”
  • This will be shown over the course of three evenings:  Thursday, August 28th, Thursday, September 4th, and Thursday, September 11th at 7:00 pm in the Karen Huntsman Library Auditorium.

Film: The Light in Her Eyes

  • “Houda al-Habash, a conservative Muslim preacher, founded a Qur’an school for girls in Damascus 30 years ago.  Every summer, her female students immerse themselves in a rigorous study of Islam. A surprising cultural shift is under way—women are claiming space within the mosque. Shot right before the uprising in Syria erupted, The Light in Her Eyes offers an extraordinary portrait of a leader who challenges the women of her community to live according to Islam, without giving up their dreams.”
  • This film will be shown Thursday, October 2nd at 7:00 pm in the Karen Huntsman Library Auditorium.

Film: Good Hair

  • “Chris Rock visits beauty salons and hairstyling battles, scientific laboratories and Indian temples to explore the way hairstyles impact the activities, pocketbooks, sexual relationships, and self-esteem of the black community in this exposé of comic proportions that only he could pull off. A raucous adventure prompted by Rock’s daughter approaching him and asking, "Daddy, how come I don’t have good hair?”, GOOD HAIR shows Chris Rock engaging in frank, funny conversations with hair-care professionals, beauty shop and barbershop patrons, and celebrities including Ice-T, Nia Long, Paul Mooney, Raven Symoné, Dr. Maya Angelou, Salt-N-Pepa, Eve and Reverend Al Sharpton – all while he struggles with the task of figuring out how to respond to his daughter's question.”
  • This film will be shown on Thursday, November 13th at 7:00 pm in the Karen Huntsman Library Auditorium.
