Course Description

Through the process of completing a pieced quilt, students will apply design principles and elements and learn and practice sewing skills. Students will also be introduced to contemporary and historical textiles.

Justification

Sewing is a valuable life skill. This course gives students an opportunity to build skills that may be transferred to entrepreneurial endeavors. It satisfies interest in using fabric as an outlet of artistic expression. It gives students an option for an elective course.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Express their design preferences by choosing fabrics with a variety of color, value, pattern and scale.
  2. Demonstrate computational skills by using the rotary cutter and mat to accurately cut fabric shapes, and by allowing an accurate 1/4 in. seam allowance.
  3. Demostrate their ability to operate a home sewing machine and quilting machine.
  4. Demonstrate that they can identify the intrinsic value of personally designed textiles.

Course Content

This course will include the study and application of• Making fabric choices• Operating the domestic sewing machine and the long arm quilting machine• Use of materials and products available to the quilt maker• Various techniques used in piecing quilt blocks• Methods of appliqué• Assembling quilt blocks and adding borders• Backing, quilting and binding the quilt• Documenting the quilt* Researching a family heirloom or historical quilt
