Make beautiful cloth-covered boxes out of binder’s board, bookbinding cloth, and paper. Students will learn box-making techniques they can carry over into future creative endeavors. Projects will be broken into small, repeatable processes that can be applied to multiple box designs. Students will learn by making one simple small box, one portfolio with a ribbon tie, at least one clamshell box, and, time permitting, even more. This workshop is open to participants at any level of experience.
Christopher McAfee is a book conservator and a book artist. Making boxes is something he does in both of those realms. He received a BFA in printmaking from BYU and an MFA in book arts from the University of Alabama. Through these programs and the 30 years of practice that followed, Christopher learned and continues to learn the technical and problem-solving skills that apply to his work. He currently heads the Collections Care Department at the BYU Library.
