Course Description

This eight-week course is designed to give students a basic foundation in listening comprehension skills. Students will listen for letters, spelling, numbers, directions, and respond in a workbook. Each unit will also include short problem solving listening tasks.

Justification

The ESL Department at Snow College houses the intensive ESL program which is accredited through the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP). The four-level program provides instruction for students at Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 (elementary through exiting levels). This course is a core course for Level 1. It introduces students to the type of listening they must do in Level 2 of ESL.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Successful ESL 0211 students will be able to accurately listen to basic listening passages using key listening skills namely, listening for gist, details, and inferencing. Students will demonstrate the mastery of the above skills through completing listening homework assignments, taking weekly quizzes, and a final exam. Students will be able to demonstrate their listening comprehension skills by accurately identifying letters, numbers, spelling, and responding to directions.

Course Content

Through a series of active listening comprehension tasks, the course will focus on the following areas: Introduction and intensive practice of letters of the alphabet, initials, acronyms, and abbreviations;

Introduction and intensive practice of numbers, ordinals, tens, hundreds, thousands, basic mathematical operations, as well as giving students the vocabulary to talk about the tasks;

Introduction using maps and following directions and spatial relations including reading charts and columns;

Introduction and intensive practice on dates, addresses, time and temporal sequence.
