Course Description

This course is designed to give students the listening skills needed in American college and university classes. The course uses content-based lectures via videos, tapes, and live lectures. Students also develop note-taking skills to prepare for fully matriculated coursework.

Justification

The ESL Department at Snow College houses the intensive ESL program which is accredited through the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP).; The four-level program provides instruction for students at Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 (elementary through exiting levels). This course is part of the core curriculum for Level 3.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Successful students will improve aural comprehension skills preparing them for regular academic coursework. They will practice and demonstrate effective note-taking of classroom lectures. Students will increase their academic vocabulary for study in American colleges and universities.

Course Content

The course will focus on intensive listening comprehension practice using a wide variety of English styles and a number of techniques and media to improve students' listening and note-taking skills. Cultural media offerings may include: popular songs, movies, documentaries, speeches, and lectures, including ancient and global history, world economics, and various sciences.
