Course Description

This course focuses on the development of well-written paragraphs. The objectives of this course are to teach American thought patterns as they relate to writing in English. Students will write paragraphs using a variety of rhetorical patterns.

Justification

The ESL Department at Snow College houses the intensive ESL program which is accredited through the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP). This course is part of the core curriculum for Level 2. It teaches students basic paragraph development which will allow them to successfully enter the Level 3 composition course where they will learn to combine paragraphs to write essays.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will understand the US English style of writing. Students will gain the ability to write well-developed English paragraphs with clear topic sentences, strong support, details, and conclusions.

Course Content

Through a series of writing assignments, students will improve their writing in English by learning to write clear, well-supported paragraphs on topics that are multi-cultural and political in nature. Through homework assignments, projects, and journal writing, students will become more proficient with their written use of the English language.
