Course Description

This course will provide comprehensive coverage of the language skills and test-taking strategies students need to do well on the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exam. This course also serves as a review of grammar, reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.

Justification

The ESL Department at Snow College houses the intensive ESL program which is accredited through the American Association of Intensive English Programs (AAIEP). The program provides instruction for students at Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4 (elementary through exiting levels). This course is part of the core curriculum for Level 4. Completion of the course is a corequisite or prerequisite for entry into regular academic courses at Snow College.

Student Learning Outcomes

  1. Students will be prepared to take the TOEFL exam. They will develop effective test-taking strategies and increase their confidence in taking standardized tests. They improve their overall abilities in speaking, listening to, reading, and writing English.

Course Content

This course includes skills and strategies for test taking including relaxing and confidence. Coursework includes example exercises, sample tests, CD-ROM practice, and vocabulary quizzes. Each section of the TOEFL exam will receive attention. Students will practice listening, reading, grammar and speaking. Students will take practice tests to learn to avoid common mistakes and efficiently utilize their time during tests..
